Why don't squirrels make good pets? Can they be domesticated?

Just curious. Why don't squirrels make good pets? Can they be domesticated?
theyll eat your nutsWhy don't squirrels make good pets? Can they be domesticated?
Because they are a wild animal. Things will go great while they are young. As they mature they will all of a sudden out of the blue - Bite.

Red squirrels quicker than Grey's

Then you will find that one person who had a squirrel its whole life who never bit. Don't believe the hype.

Squirrels do not carry rabies.
My mother had a pet squirrels when she was a kid. I don't think you should have them as pets though.
My vet has red squirrels as pets. I believe it is more common to keep that variety then gray squirrels. You cannot just pick up a squirrel from your tree outside. You would have to find a breeder and get the squirrel when it is very young. Hand training is important here. As I have mentioned...my vet speaks of his pet squirrels often and fondly. He has never expressed any negatives about owning one. As far as I'm concerned -- WHO KNOWS! lol I have never owned one. All animals have teeth and are capable of biting. Squirrels are just like cats and dogs. They must visit the vet regularly for check-ups and shots.
They are rabid rodents that don't like being inside.
They can give you rabies...Their rats with tails even thought they look cute...
They need too much excercise to be kept in a cage, and if let loose in the house they would do a lot of damage.

When killing pesky squirrels who steal your tomatoes, do you like to use the T-Rex or the shotgun?

the shotgun is more effective i think :-P but the squirrels around here live in fear and wouldnt dream of taking a tomato. Personally i have stepped up from shotgun to rifle to make it more of a fun sport... HEADSHOT!!!!!!!!!!When killing pesky squirrels who steal your tomatoes, do you like to use the T-Rex or the shotgun?
I let them have the tomatoes, it's like payment to the mob. I don't want to end up on any squirrels hit list, at least not until the bunnies wipe them out........then we will all be bowing to them. When killing pesky squirrels who steal your tomatoes, do you like to use the T-Rex or the shotgun?
I think I'm gonna test out my son's new slingshot.
Ummmm..... why kill them..... they are there for our enjoyment, I talk to them everyday, and YES they do listen!!!

.12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?

i am going hunting in pennsylvania in November for mainly squirrels and rabbits, i will use a mossberg 500 for the rabbits, but im not sure what to use for squirrels, i can either use a ruger 10/22, scope zeroed in perfectly, i can get 5 shots through the same hole, or a .12 gage using low brass #6 shot... any suggestions?.12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?
A head shot with a .22 does away with the problem of bits of shot ending up in the meat. Not a pleasant thing to bite down on. If you are as good as you say, go with the .22 for the squirrels. I'd use it on the bunnies for the same reason. When you're good enough to do it, go for it..12 gage or ruger 10/22 for hunting squirrels?
Ok, you CAN technically use a rifle, or even a low caliber pistol to shoot the rabbits, but a shotgun is a little too much for a squirrel I'd say. I'd use the rifle for the squirrels, and the shotgun for the rabbits. If you're not hunting rabbits with dogs, then I don't see much of a problem with hunting rabbits with the rifle as well, just be aware, if you're using dogs, and trying to aim with a scope, you have a chance of losing your peripheral vision and shooting a dog. That's what would make the biggest difference to me, is if you're taking dogs to chase the rabbits, otherwise, do what you think you're capable of, although rabbit hunting with a rifle sounds unsafe to me.
consider this, if your hunting squirrels and a rabbit jumps up, or vice versa, you will use what is in your hand, correct? so if you can use one gun for both, why carry two guns?

in my opinion, the 22 is more fun to hunt with, but the shotgun will bring home more meat. i prefer the 22 for rabbits, since they will usually run a short distance when flushed from cover, then stop to check their surroundings. the 22 gives me the edge for distance shots.

on the other hand, nothing beats a shotgun for fast moving targets, whether in the tree or on the ground.

i have hunted squirrels for years with a shotgun loaded with 12 gage,

2 3/4 in #6 shot and have never had a problem with damaged meat, unless i shot full choke too close. (i use a side by side full and modified)

my opinion? take the shotgun, leave the 22 at home. hunt smart and bring home the game.

It depends on what you're comfortable shooting. I know that people have recommended the 10/22. That's great if you can hit the target. Some have a hard time doing that and it is imperative to watch where you are shooting because the bullets travel over a mile.

It's easier to hit a rabbit or squirrel with a shotgun, although I would not use #6s. That is more for ducks and pheasant. I would use #7.5, 8 or 9s. Using an improved cylinder choke tube will give you a wider pattern so if you hit an animal, it won't tear up the meat as much as a full or modified choke.
The shot gun is your best bet. The 22 will tear up more then a shot gun unless you can make head shots. As long as you are shooting at a distance and not point blank, the shot gun will only hit with a few pellets. If you are just sitting and watching, then the 22 is ok, but a running shot will need a shot gun.
When I hunt alone I stick with an accurate 22 rifle and try to keep it at head shots, but when hunting with a friend, w go with 1 rifle and 1 shotgun. The runners are collected with the shotgun, while those sitting and scolding are head shot. I also think low brass #6 shot is the best. any smaller and you will have alot more pellets to find..

Happy hunting
The Ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice for Squirrel Hunting. Like the answer before me stated, you will lose a lot of meat with a Shot-Gun.
Use a .22.
Use the .22 for both or you will loose a lot of meat.
which ever your most comfortable with ,they are both good!
A .12 gage has too many pellet . question is how many hole do you want in a squirrel ?

Does Australia or New Zealand have grey squirrels or raccoons ? in the wild ?

I am wondering if North America's most famous invasive species has invaded your country ? they are taking over EuropeDoes Australia or New Zealand have grey squirrels or raccoons ? in the wild ?
No squirrels or raccoons in this country.

For our Aussie 'furballs' or animals go to ::::

http://www.australianfauna.com/australia鈥?/a>Does Australia or New Zealand have grey squirrels or raccoons ? in the wild ?
No, neither of us have grey squirrels or raccoons in the wild, but we both have o'possums. In Australia they are protected, but in New Zealand they are a noxious pest which destroy our native forests.
Neither squirrels nor raccoons have been introduced to Australia - yet. We have plenty of other imported pests including rabbits, hares, foxes, cats, dogs, pigs, buffalo, horses, camels, donkeys, goats, cane toads, starlings, indian mynas, blackbirds, pigeons etc etc. We really don't need any more
    Definitely NOT raccoons!

Squirrel? No we don't - at least not that I know of.

    Thanks for the two points
Australia definately does not have squirrels or raccoons. I am fairly sure NZ doesn't have them either.
They are not here in New Zealand as far as I am aware.

As Islands, it would be very difficult for them to get here and our border security is very tight when it comes to pests etc.
There is apparently a small area around Perth Zoo that has feral Palm Squirrels living in it. I have seen suggestions that the Palm Squirrels have now been wiped out, but the WA government is still looking for them, so maybe they are still out there.

Grey Squirrels were previously introduced in Melbourne, but appear to have gone extinct.

Unlike other introduced species, both types of squirrel have apparently struggled to live in the native Australian environment. They were able to survive only in the cities and suburbs where there were parks and gardens with plenty of introduced plant species for them to feed off.
no, however we have our own invasive species (read bloody pest) called a possum. They eat the eggs of our native birds and rip to shreds the bark and leaves of our forests grrrrrrr!!

    (I am from New Zealand).
definately not in New Zealand...I remember when living in the UK and I had only been there a couple of days before I saw my first squirrels....yes the grey ones...I was completely fascinated by them as we have nothing like them here.

I was teaching science in schools there and we watched some little clips about how the red squirrel is now retreating to only small areas of the UK now, while the grey squirrel is now rampent and rapidly expandings its habitat.....even tho they are sooooo cute and I watched them for hours...I can see they are a problem.

New Zealand and Australia have pretty stringent biological security and would not allow them to enter and would get rid of them all if they did arrive.
My husband is an Aussie in the US, and I remember the first time he had ever seen a squirrel here, he couldn't stop looking at it. As it turns out, he had never seen one before. He said they don't have squirrels anywhere in Australia.

    Squirrels are scared of me?

squirrels come to my house for eating grains but are very scared of me what should i do so that they are not scared of me and become friendly with me???????Squirrels are scared of me?
Be patient. It takes time for them to earn your trust. I feed the squirrels also %26amp; over time I have had them finally trust me enough to actually take peanuts from my hand.Squirrels are scared of me?
Squirrels are wild animals, they are supposed to be scared of you.

It is fine to offer food for them (as long as you are dedicated to it as they will come to rely on you and of course you provide healthy foods for squirrels) but, do not try to tame them. It will cause them more harm than good.

The instinct to be afraid of humans prevents them from being attacked by predators. If you tame them then they may become brave enough to approach anyone...maybe someone not as kind as you. This happens a lot at campgrounds where people leave out food and try to feed chipmunks and squirrels. Often times, they end up eating ANY food offered by a human and sometimes that food can be fatal.

You can set up a squirrel feeder in your backyard and watch them from a distance. This is a better alternative then trying to tame them. Just enjoy them as they are...wild animals.

    Good luck!
Be careful, my daughters friend was attacked by one, bit her quite badly. They are cute to watch though, I have them in my garden.
Umm... don't try to befriend squirrels. There have been cases of them becoming too people friendly and actually (I'm not kidding) attacking adults. They are wild animals. They also carry diseases which we cannot vaccinate against. My advice is too enjoy them from a safe distance and set up some squirrel feeders (Menards and Lowes sell them). This reminds me of my ex bf who loved feeding the squirrels and wore a tee shirt that said ';I have large nuts'; with a squirrel eating a big nut. He made the mistake of wearing it in a very gay area in Chicago (atleast I think it was a mistake). ANYWAYS, DON'T BE SQUIRRELY!

Is anyone else afraid of squirrels?

ok im 14 now but when i was 11 this squirrel camewithin an inch of my face while it ws jumping from a fence to a tree while i was riding my bike (if u r laughing at picturing this stop)to this day i cross the street to get away from squrriels! it sounds so funny but it isnt! any ideas how to solve problemIs anyone else afraid of squirrels?
You're allowing yourself to feed your own fear. You've had a serious startle reaction from the biking incident, but everything since then has stemmed from that. But I have a secret:

That first squirrel didn't spread the word about you. There is no conspiracy of the squirrels, they're not planning their next move to freak you out or perform biological experiments on you. So chill!

Next time you see one, choose NOT to have your freak out anxiety attack. Watch what he does. He may watch you, or fuss at you if he thinks you're threatening, but if you get closer to him I guarantee you the squirrel will yield to you and back off. If you flap and wave and scream and freak out at him, he'll still back off but the neighbors will bring their kids in whenever you go outside. Is anyone else afraid of squirrels?

Best BB Gun for killing squirrels?

Well, I live in Upstate New York, and we have a fairly annoying squirrel/chipmunk problem on our property. Now, since we don't live right next to our neighbors, the idea of a BB or pellet gun is a fairly appealing one. Now, I don't have any experience with BB guns, so I have no clue what makes one better than the next. All I really know is that I want a rifle for the distance, so my question is:

What would be the best BB gun to buy in order to kill these rodents?Best BB Gun for killing squirrels?
Daisy Powerline 880 (cal .177). They're cheap (like 70 bucks) and really powerful. I have one, and it's a lot of fun to shoot. And I've taken out my share of pest rabbits with that thing, and I can always count on a clean kill if I pump it 10 times.

    * If you have enough space, I'd reccomend a .22 rifle. That will kill anything if you use it right and you could reach out and touch your rodent friend. Be careful, cuz if you hit your neighbors house, it can go through the wall and hurt or kill someone. They're small, but they can kill just like any gun. They cost about $200 for a Ruger 10/22 (the best .22 you'll find), but the ammo is really cheap, about $9 for 550 rds. They're also a lot of fun to shoot. I should also mention that a couple of years back some dipshits were taking turns shooting each other with an 880, and one of them got killed when the other one shot him in the head. Dateline NBC did a show on it, so that should show you that the pellet gun is just as lethal as a real gun if used right.Best BB Gun for killing squirrels?
There is an ad in american rifleman for gamo and I believe they have one air rfile .17 caliber that shoots 1600 fps, running about $500.00

Go to ***** Sporting goods and you should find a Gamo air rifle .17 caliber in 850 to 1000 fps range for about $199.00

just make sure you get the gamo hunting pellets, they are denser than lead, and try and not to shoot greater than 20 to 30 yards......most states consider air rifles to be treated as rifles...........
any 12ga......they hold alot of bb's...........
Get a break-barrel pellet gun, not a pump-action bb gun they break more easily. I've had about 3 different pump bb guns for about $40 each, then i decided to get this gun. It's a good deal and it will last.

    http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa鈥?/a>
Get one of the pump pellet guns. They pack more wallop and get better distance than a standard bb gun. They shoot both bbs and pellets.
A .223 AR-15 varmint rifle works best. If you haven't been shooting your whole life your SOL when it comes to taking out the local rodent population, my guess is they can screw better than a beginer can shoot a pellet gun.
Instead of a BB gun, try a pellet rifle. They are much more powerful, flatter shooting, and have a greater range. It will also kill them quicker and not make them suffer. Try doing some research on a Crossman Quest 1000X. That is what I have and it is very powerful and I have killed chipmunks in ranges anywhere from 5 yards to 50 yards. Highly recommend it.
To humanely harvest a squirrel, you should use nothing LESS than a .22 caliber cartridge or a .410 shotgun shell. Both will dispatch the squirrel humanely. The fairly new .17 HMR is also an excellent round, but a little more expensive to shoot than the aforementioned alternatives..... Stay away from the BB guns unless you're talking about the $1000.00 dollar jobs.
The break barrel pellet guns that are rifled, and have high muzzle velocity. A high quality pointed pellet. Lots of target practice.

finally, ALWAYS be aware of whats behind your target! When you miss, your projectile is still going somewhere. Know where that will be before you shoot.
    I would use a pellet gun not a BB gun...pellet guns are a lot stronger....And I would tell RICHARD and Brian M to go F U C K themselves.

Why does my dog kill squirrels??? ?

He's a 9 month old Labrador... i don't know how he does it but he has killed about 4 squirrels in the past two mouths, after he strangles them to death he barks at them while they are already dead and acts as if he was scared of them...why does he do it??? he doesn't get out much and hes always in the back yard, which is pretty big for him. I want him to stop killing the poor animals... what should i do to make him understand he shouldn't do that? Why does my dog kill squirrels??? ?
    Let's see...

You have a teenage dog, full of vinegar...

He's a Labrador Retriever, which is a hunting dog with a strong prey drive.

You say he's in a ';pretty big'; back yard, so I guess you think that a large back yard is enough exercise for him to keep him happy and he'll exercise himself without any interaction from you?

And you want to teach him that he shouldn't do what he was bred to do! That's an interesting concept.

In reality, if you're not exercising him enough, then the squirrels are providing him with some much needed entertainment and exercise, and it uses his prey drive.

Why don't you just make some brunswick stew out of those pesty squirrels ??? -!-Why does my dog kill squirrels??? ?
He may chase and kill the squirrels out of boredom or it's possible he simply enjoys it. Either way a dog needs regular daily exercise outside the back yard, in the case of a 9 month old Lab that would be around 45 minutes.

If you take him on at least one 45 minute walk, you can then play frisbee/ball or another active game to occupy his mind %26amp; give him exercise in the back garden.

    {My Dobermann b*tch has a high prey drive %26amp; loves to chase rabbits, foxes, squirrels %26amp; ducks, but as yet has never caught one.}
Let's see.......you own a Labrador RETRIEVER. They were bred for hunting and your dog's instincts are very much alive. I agree it's disgusting that he is killing squirrels but all canines are predators. My chihuahua killed a mole which was heart breaking but there is really nothing you can do except attempt to monitor him better outside to cut down on his kills.
It's probably because they taste good. My 10 year old Doberman used to be obsessed with Squirrels. Now if I tell him not to chase them, he stops whatever he is doing. You should work on training your dog. The more obedient they are, the better off you will be.
My Basenji mix used to kill any bird that landed in the back yard. Eventually the birds learned and stopped landing in the yard, the squirrels will learn and stay away.
    WHY??

    Because it's a GOOD DOG!!!

Dogs are CARNIVORES,dear.KILL other animals to live.
scream NO when he barks at birds or other animals.

for my dog, i just let her be and its in their nature to kill

things, even if they have there better tasting dog food. :D

My dog does it to, but with birds. I don't mind at all, dogs are carnivores, they are hunters. Don't take away his natural instinct.

Why do trees depend on squirrels?

Trees do depend on squirrels to take acorns, seeds, and pinecones (depending on the tree) and help scatter them so that there is a possibility that new trees will grow.

This is one of the reasons how tree species survive.

But other than that, squirrels may eat away at the bark of the tree, which may be harmful. Why do trees depend on squirrels?
Squirrels do plant the seeds by burying them for later use, and then they may forget where they put them. Why do trees depend on squirrels?
They DON'Tdepend on them, ultimately, but sometimes the squirrels will get nuts out of the tree and then drop them on the ground, losing them by accident.. The nuts may then grow into new trees.

    What's with white tailed squirrels?

Here in northern Illinois we have had a number of sighting of red squirrels with white tails. I think its because of partial albinism, but I was curious what caused it and why only the tails of several squirrels over a 200 mile radius are only now being seen this year. What's with white tailed squirrels?
The most widespread member of its genus in North America, the White-tailed Antelope Squirrel is most active in midmorning and late afternoon, with a lull during the heat of the day. During winter, it is active throughout midday, spending much time basking in the sun. It hibernates in northern parts of its range, but may or may not hibernate in more southerly areas. This species, like other antelope squirrels, runs fast, with its tail held over its back, and exposing its white underparts. Usually foraging on the ground, but sometimes in yuccas or cacti, it feeds on green vegetation, seeds, insects, and vertebrate flesh, in descending order of importance. Green vegetation, especially evening primrose and storksbill, makes up the largest part of this animal鈥檚 diet from December to May; it eats seeds, particularly those of ephedra, yucca, and opuntia, all year, but in smallest quantities in March and April. Grasshoppers contribute to the diet in spring and summer, beetles in autumn, and vertebrates all year, probably as carrion. The White-tailed Antelope Squirrel usually lives in burrows, but may also take up residence in rock crevices or abandoned burrows of other animals, often kangaroo rats. Burrows are about 18 inches (450 mm) deep, their entrances under shrubs or in the open. Inside are food caches and, near the center of the system, a nest measuring about 5 to 8 inches (130 to 200 mm) in diameter. It uses available material to build a nest, which may incorporate grasses, fur, and bark. Many burrows throughout the home range allow refuge from danger and from heat. Escape burrows are shorter than home burrows, with no nest or food caches. The White-tailed Antelope Squirrel forms dominance hierarchies, which are maintained by visual and tactical cues. Young animals may lie on the ground and face off with one another, and then proceed to box or wrestle until dominance is established. This sparring is accompanied by growls, chattering, and chirps. Greetings are by oral or nasal touching. This species mates between February and June. The mating season peaks in February and March in southern Nevada, though in California it apparently takes place entirely within a two-week period. This desert creature has several adaptations to survive in extreme heat. When exposed to critical temperatures, it will enter a burrow and crawl on the floor with its sparsely furred belly in contact with the ground, which quickly draws out excess heat. While out of the burrow, this species uses available shade or shades itself with its tail, and climbs into bushes where the airflow is greater.

description Upperparts buff in summer, gray in winter; 1 narrow white stripe on each side. Underparts white. Underside of tail pure white, with black-tipped hairs forming narrow black border. Upperside of tail has 1 black band. Ears small. L 7 5/8鈥? 3/8'; (194鈥?39 mm); T 2 1/8鈥? 3/8'; (54鈥?7 mm); HF 1 3/8鈥? 5/8'; (35鈥?3 mm); Wt 3鈥? 1/2 oz (85鈥?56 g).What's with white tailed squirrels?
Red Squirrels are redder in the summer, and in Britain they develop a white tail in summer. The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several different coat colour morphs ranging from black to red. Red coats are most common in Great Britain; in other parts of Europe and Asia the different coat colours co-exist within populations, much like hair colour in humans. The underside of the squirrel is always white-cream in colour. Red squirrels shed their coats twice a year, switching from a thinner summer coat to a thicker, darker winter coat with noticeably larger ear-tufts (a prominent distinguishing feature of this species) between August and November. A lighter, redder overall coat colour, along with the larger ear-tufts, helps to distinguish the European red squirrel from either of the Eastern Grey Squirrel or the American Red Squirrel.

This is what I could gather from a few websites.

Can I have some help with a few questions on squirrels? ?

    1. What nuts do squirrels eat? What trees do these nuts come from?

    2. What is the most common type of squirrel (like, the kind you'd see on the street).

    3. What type of trees do squirrels live in?

Squirrels eat pretty much whatever they can find. Here in MI they eat acorns (from oak trees) walnuts (walnut trees) chestnuts, (chestnut tree) hickory nuts (hickory trees) Plus whatever we out out for the birds. they are especially fond of sunflower seeds. I feed them unsalted peanuts just because they like the novelty and they run to take then from me when I go outside.

Here there are primarily the Eastern Grey squirrels and the black squirrels are moving in from the Western part of the state.

In my yard they live in big old, oak trees.

  • OMG THE PLAGUE IN SQUIRRELS?

Do you think its going to spread and be as horrible as it was in like midieval times or whatever?OMG THE PLAGUE IN SQUIRRELS?
Not very likely. The disease is spread by fleas that have fed on an infected host. We have a lot fewer fleas (and squirrels!) living in our homes these days compared to the hoards of rats and their fleas that infested homes in medieval times.

yep, don't worry though. just take her to the doctor to get a shot. :]
    All animals can have rabies.
No. Only ground squirrels and flying squirrels.
They're just rats with big fury tales. Yes, they can carry rabies.
Yes! I was bitten when I was 10. They had police and animal control out looking for this injured squirrel that I had tried to rescue from a cat. They said they had to check for rabies, or I would have to go through the series of shots...

    Where do squirrels pee?

My boyfriend and I were pondering the above question. Do they pee in trees or on the ground? Do they take aim at objects, or just go as they cruise around?Where do squirrels pee?
well i haven't heard about flying squirrel pee so i think they just go on the ground. maybe the go in their nests or something.

Are squirrels more intelligent than we give them credit for?

basically my boyfriend had them living in the guttering above his bedroom window. for about 6 years he heard scratching but never knew what it was. The other day i was sitting on the bed when i made direct eye contact with this one squirrel who poked his head out of the plastic covering (they actually live inside the plastic bit) it scared the living daylights out of me because we assumed it was all in our imagination and the scratching was something else. Since then we havent heard a peep from them which seems more than a coincidence. Do you think that because me and Mr Squirrel made direct eye contact for a good few seconds, he thought the'd been rumbled and decided to move on? I know what i saw so im not mad, it just seems weird that they have left since our encounter...Are squirrels more intelligent than we give them credit for?
Maybe they did'nt like sharing the house with you, of course they are intelligent, they find their nuts in the snow, don't they? Are squirrels more intelligent than we give them credit for?
I don't know about your specific situation, but squirrels are very intelligent in general.
Perhaps you frightened the poor bleeder more than he scared you.
Yes. The squirrels where I live know how to case a baby stroller for food. I had my kids in the park and one squirrel methodically checked the front stroller seat, the back stroller seat and the storage area beneath for crumbs and food. Obviously he's learned that strollers are a good source of food.

Squirrels are also famous for defeating nearly every attempt to prevent them for accessing bird feeders.

My Doxie boy is obsessed with squirrels!?

I often take walks with my mini doxie, and occasionally let him off-leash when on the back quiet country roads. But if he catches site of anything small and furry, he's gone. Is there any method that I can use to keep him nearby even when tempted to run after something? I know most of you will only tell me to keep the leash on him, but I enjoy trusting my dog and letting him wander in front or to the side of me without being completely restrained. My Doxie boy is obsessed with squirrels!?
aint nothing you can do about dogs chasing other animals. My Doxie boy is obsessed with squirrels!?
Will you enjoy watching your dog get struck by a car and killed or seriously injured as much as you enjoy ';trusting'; him? My grandparents live on a quiet back country road in an area with no leash law...their dog was killed instantly by a speeding mini-van. People who drive back country road tend to do so going FAR above the unstated speed limit of 55 MPH and they aren't going to see a miniature dachshund before they hit him. You have a breed that was bred to hunt vermin. Your dog is going to chase squirrels and anything else small and furry...it's basic instinct and in most dachshunds it is far stronger than any amount of training. Find a safer place to let your dog run off leash and keep him on a leash when walking on the side of the road for his own safety.
Recall training and plenty of it because what you are dealing with is his natural prey drive. Dachshunds were bred to go after badgers first and foremost and that drive transfers to other prey type animals like squirrels. Until he has recall, leave it and stay down pact you need to keep him on a leash.
don't let him walk in front only beside or behind so as you can catch site of the small furry before he does and then you can correct him make sure you catch his interest in the small furry straight away and correct it by telling him to leave or whatever command you use
Did you research the breed before getting one?

Dachshunds are badger hunters. They tend to hunt small animals as well!

Get a long line if you want him to have more freedom. He also needs obedience training so that you can call him back when he decides to hunt.
Look up the history on your dog. I think that is what it was breed for back in the early day.

    Yes, squirrels have tongues.

They speak Tonkinese.Do squirrels have tounges?
Four of them to be exact. One on each front paw near their middle toe, one of the end of their tale so they can taste the wind to make sure no snakes are hiding in the trees and one in the usual place for tasting things and making noise. Gosh- don't they teach anything in school anymore?
No they don't have tounges they tongues!! All mammals do. The reason they can't speak English is because they don't have a voice box like humans do!!! Are you blonde?!?!?!?!?!

    Stopping Squirrels From digging?

Does anyone know how to stop squirrels from digging up potted plants on the patio?Stopping Squirrels From digging?
We had a problem with squirrels eating or bird seed at one point.

What we did was put hot sauce on the tree they were climbing.

Maybe put hot sauce on you pot or on top of the soil.

The hot sauce burns the squirrels paws and they usually stop.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Nothing that I can think of. That's what they were bred to do, chase and kill small animals. You could try teaching a really solid ';come'; command, but his instinct will probably be greater then training. You could try posting this in the dog section, you may get some more responses.

Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?

Probably because if the squirrels could have talked in the Garden of Eden, they would have been more interested in conversations about where food was, rather than trying to flatter and trick a woman.

Can you see a squirrel telling a young lady that they should go and try to eat some of that forbidden fruit to gain knowledge?? No, but I could see the squirrel saying to Eve, ';come on, come on, let's go get that fruit'; and then the squirrel would have demanded all of the fruit for themselves!!Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?
Eve is a fictional character. Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?
My question is if you believe in the bible, and the bible never said that talking animals was normal, why didn't Eve freak out when the snake talked? And if we are to assume animals did talk, why did they stop talking? Can anyone else see how totally ridiculous this thought process is?
Because..';she loved talking with the snake. He made little sounds with his tongue. The snake made her feel good inside...';-Laurie Anderson the snake is just a metaphor, as with most of the older old testiment. Obviously it's about good vs. evil and snakes are the symbol of evil.

My theory: It represents oral sex and the snake was his penis and she wanted to take a bite of the apple on top but he thought it was wrong, or was afraid she would 'bite it'. After all -it's another way that ancient man blamed all his mistakes on listening to the woman. She took the fall or was thrown under the bus by those ancient wisemen who were trying to explain what 'IT' is all about.
Squirrely, I think it was the trouser snake that she was really after. ; )
    LOL

Imagine the catastrophe if she DID listen to the talking squirrel.
Because fruit tastes better than acorns?
Because she knew the squirrel was nuts...she SHOULD have listened to God's Kitty.

    Meows! =^-^=
Because the snake had a long hard tail, hehe
Because she was stupid - duh!! Only the Squirrel can lead us.
Satan posessed the snake....ugh you all know this

    im letting out air
We'd all have been better off if she had, I'm sure. The squirrel would have told her to eat nuts, not fruit, and the nut tree was not forbidden.

    Oh, well; maybe next time.
The squirrel was off with the moose ... the snake was all she had at the time.
If she had she might have eaten Adams nuts by mistake
Where's that talking donkey when you need him? We need Balaam to chime in!
rocky and bullwinkle didn't appear til after they left the garden
The squirrels put the snake up to it. Didn't want to lose their legs.

I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?

Everytime I go out to my backyard (which is edged by a forest) a squirrel attacks me. Seriously, I have scratches all over me from them. This has happened like six times. Is there anyway to keep them away from me?I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?
Stop being so nuts =)I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?
You might have to get in touch with an exterminator. If you don't want the animal killed, you should look for one that humanly traps animals and takes them else where to let them loose. Also, when the animal is caught, you might want to have them take it to a vet to make sure it doesn't have rabies because if this squirrel has scratched you and broke the skin, it could be rabid or have some other problem like parasites that could invade humans also. Surely this is unusual for a wild squirrel to attack you unless it has babies near your house and it is protecting them.
ur lucky, i wish i had squirrels that attacked me, so i could beat the sh*t outa them.

but just do what i would do, get a stick pretend its a sword, and start whacking them. (sorry, ima nerd) :P
well cant be afraid to walk in your own back yard, i say get a bowl, fill it with anti freeze cause its extra sweet so they'll drink it and it poisonous. theyll be droppin from the trees in no time
bring a machine gun with you next time you go out, and then as they get near you just blast them away.

or just stop going out into your backyard.
take a shop-vac with you %26amp; just suck 'em up... lol, seriously, try putting out some mothballs, most animals hate them. it keeps them %26amp; the coons out of my shed
Shoot them. A .22 would obliterate the lil s**t.
    seriously?
hav a bowl next 2 u filled with tiny bits of apple nuts etc. and throw it into the forest everytime they come close
    kill everyone

    attack them.
    ROFL
    keep away from their home
