Are squirrels related to rats?

Yes. Both are classified as rodents. I call squirrels ';tree rats';Are squirrels related to rats?
Yes:-

Both are Mammals;

Both are Rodents (Order Rodentia)

Squirrels belong to the Family Sciuridae (which contains 278 different species)

Rats belong to the Family Muridae (about 50 species)Are squirrels related to rats?
I have to start by saying that squirrels are the most lovely creatures on earth (I know, I used to be one!).

Then, yes, rat and squirrels are related :

Squirrels are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Sciuridae

Rats are classified are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Muridae

And Squirrels are also Rats with a good PR!
Squirrels are known to be rodents.............so.........
Good question. Yes they are. Like the other guy said ';they are both rodents';.
Yes both are animals you should be trying to kill.
Yes there rodents
I don't know, but they taste the same.
yes a squirrels is just a rat with a bushy tail and a rabbit is a rat with a cotton tail all animals that need to constantly chew and gnaw on something to keeps its front teeth short are rodent and related to the rat.

Can squirrels get rabies?

My husband got bit by a squirrel and someone told us they can't get rabies or they don't carry it. Is this true? Can squirrels get rabies?
Any mammal can get rabies. The most common wild reservoirs of rabies are raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes, and coyotes. Domestic mammals can also get rabies. Cats, cattle, and dogs are the most frequently reported rabid domestic animals in the United States.

Small rodents (such as squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and chipmunks, ) and lagomorphs (such as rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States. Bites by these animals are usually not considered a risk of rabies unless the animal was sick or behaving in any unusual manner and rabies is widespread in your area. However, from 1985 through 1994, woodchucks accounted for 86% of the 368 cases of rabies among rodents reported to CDC. Woodchucks or groundhogs (Marmota monax) are the only rodents that may be frequently submitted to state health department because of a suspicion of rabies. In all cases involving rodents, the state or local health department should be consulted before a decision is made to initiate postexposure prophylaxis (PEP).Can squirrels get rabies?
You can get rabies by them, why else would they bite you? Squirrels never bite unless they have rabies then they usually have like saliva by their mouth act weird and instead running away from humans they would attack them.

The following is from wikipedia

';Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected domestic farm animals, groundhogs, weasels and other wild carnivores. Squirrels, rodents and rabbits are seldom infected';
squirrels can get rabies.
Yes, they can get rabies...but they are not likely carriers. The squirrel would have had to be attacked by a rabid animal and probably would not have survived the attack to be able to be a carrier due to it's small size.
they are most likely to be eaten when they get into the contamined saliva, since this most likely is present near the mouth of a fox or a dog. anyway rabies infection has been observed with the roedeers, so why not with squirrels.

most squirells are not infected by rabies but they are simply daring.
yes, squirrels can get rabies. almost every outdoor animal can get rabies
Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that causes acute encephalitis in mammals. Squirrels also can get rabies.
Rabies can be carried and transmitted by any mammal. No, squirrels are not one of the major reservoirs for the disease, but it is still very possible to get rabies from a squirrel.
Squirrels are seldom found to have rabies but it is possible. The reason is unkown, but perhaps if they are attacked by a rabid animal they are usually killed. There may also be something about squirrel biology that makes it difficult for them to become infected.

There are no second chances with rabies, however, so if you did not kill or capture the squirrel for testing, it is best to have the shots.
All warm blooded mammals can contract rabies. Rodents are the least likely to spread the virus due to the fact that they rarely survive the bite of an affected animal(the only means of tranmitting the virus is through bites or scratches that break the skin).
They absolutely can. As a matter of fact, there was a news story a few weeks ago about a rabid squirrel attacking two people before they were able to kill it. They then sent it off for testing bc of its irradical behavior, and it tested positive for rabies. So, of course, the two people who were attacked had to have a rabies vaccination. So, yes, they definitely can.
Any warm blooded animal can get rabies (yes, even horses and cows!). However, the most common vectors in the US are skunks, raccoons and bats. Rarely are other wild animals found with the disease.

Searching on rabies I found the following info:

Small rodents (such as squirrels, hamsters, prairie dogs, gerbils, chipmunks, gophers, rats,

mice, etc.) and lagomorphs (such as rabbits and hares) are only rarely found to be infected with

rabies and have not been known to cause human rabies in the United States. The reason for this

appears to be that these small animals are unlikely to survive an attack from a rabid animal to

subsequently develop the disease.

The full document is here and includes a rabies risk assessment flow chart http://www.maine.gov/agriculture/aw/docu鈥?/a>

If in doubt, the animal should be captured and submitted for testing if possible.

Further, you should assess the circumstances of the bite. Was the bite warranted or did the squirrel act aggressively and without provocation? Was the squirrel acting in a particular way? What was the appearance of the squirrel? Often by the time animals are showing clinical signs of the disease, their physical appearance has substantially deteriorated (dull fur, dirty, unhealthy appearance). If the person bitten was offering food, or was otherwise interacting with the wild animal, a bite was probably a natural reaction due to being too close to the animal.

Training my dog to not chase squirrels?!!?

My dog walks beside me. He know.s sit, down, drop it and rollover. He just cant resist squirrels.Training my dog to not chase squirrels?!!?
What breed is he? My greyhound can't resist them either. I try not to let her off lead where they might be around, mainly because she has hurt herself while chasing.

When I let her she used to run around for a while and then come back. In safe places I couldn't see the harm in it (until she needed stitches that is) - here squirrels are considered vermin.Training my dog to not chase squirrels?!!?
First.. find or rent a 500 pound squirrel.

Seriously, you are not going to be able to do that. The squirrel's jerky movements and high pitched chittering are virtually irresistable to almost all young dogs. (As they get older they stop chasing everything). Sort of like barking at the mailman.

.
I had the same problem, except my dog was able to get them...disgusting. Then I found this website;

  • Hi today we found 3 baby squirrels near my house, anybody tell me how to save it, need feeding instructions?

Contact your state's wildlife rescue organization. They will tell you exactly what to do and what to feed the squirrels. They usually have a 24 hour hotline so check your phone book.Hi today we found 3 baby squirrels near my house, anybody tell me how to save it, need feeding instructions?

Hi today we found 3 baby squirrels near my house, anybody tell me how to save it, need feeding instructions?
Bring em back, the mother will take care of em. They start with milk, then small seeds. Try giving them bird feeder seeds.
    What Licorcemom and Ilse said!
ask a vet or call an animal shelter or call a pet store. maybe look on the internet too. good luck! baby squirrels are cute!
sorry i don't know. but u can ask uncle donald.
Try calling your local wildlife or nature center for information. The squirrels may not be in fact abandoned, the mother may just be away from the nest for a period of time. They will be able to help you discern if indeed they need to be rescued and can tell you how and what to feed them. Frequently KMR ( Kitten Milk Replacer is used..buy it at the grocery or pet store ) and need to be kept warm with a heating pad under PART of the box so they don't overheat. They sometimes need feedings every 2 hours. They need to be kept in a quiet, darkened, cozy box. CHECK WITH THE NATURE CENTER...or maybe your vet.

I wanna knowing more about squirrels's life?

i've ane one year old little squirel and wanna learning more about itI wanna knowing more about squirrels's life?
I've had squirrels before, but what would help if you say how long you've had it?

Ok, well, presuming you haven't had it for long....if its tame then make sure you give it as much loving attention as you can (feed her/him stuff that he/she likes from your hand so he/she knows that you mean good), because like most animals, they can go wild again and then its really hard to tame it again.....give it a variety of fruit and nuts and have a resonable sized enclosure with branches so it can jump around and get it daily exercise. The one thing that a sqiurrel needs is another squirrel but since you have one(?) then that give you another reason to give it as much attention as you can....try not to let it run free in the house if its not really totally used to you, this is depending on your squirrels character. (It happened to me and it was a total disaster trying to catch her agian so we left her for a few days and then as far as i remember she got bored and we found her in her cage eating her food. Sometimes squirrels will sit on a branch and ';chirp';, twitching its tail up and down. Don't exactly know what that means but I think they trying to communicate.

I hope that helped a bit! Have fun with you squirrel and give it attention. :-)

P.S. Squirrels bite hard! So try not to get bitten!I wanna knowing more about squirrels's life?
You can go to google.com or askjeeves.com and get more information about anything.
    You van try www.googel.com
Try your local library. They should have books on wildlife. The people that work there will be able to help you.
Squirrel's belong to the order ';Rodentia';, with 1650 species, it is the largest group of living mammals. It also comprises forty percent of all present day mammal species.

There are over 365 species of squirrels in seven families. They include the tree squirrel, ground squirrel, and flying squirrel. Plus many squirrel-like mammals such as the gopher, ground hog and prairie dog.

Squirrels are the most active in late winter, when the mating season begins. The males will chase a females, as well as, chase off other suitors. This ritual of chasing, occurs through the trees at top speed. While they perform some of the most breathtaking acrobatics imaginable.

The period of gestation varies from 33 days in the smaller species of pine squirrels, up to 60 days for the larger species such as the common gray and fox squirrels.

Squirrels are usually born in the early spring. The average litter consists of four. This varies with climate and location. A second litter can occur in mid summer, if there is an adequate food supply.

A female squirrel will choose the strongest male during mating season, but is unlikely to breed with that male again. This is natures way of reducing inbreeding, and to preserve the species.

A baby squirrel weighs approximately one ounce at birth, and is about one inch long. They do not have hair or teeth, and are virtually blind for the first six to eight weeks.

Gray squirrels come in many colors. Shades of gray are the most common followed by shades of brown. There are also pure white and pure black squirrels, but both are variations of the gray squirrel.

The common Red squirrel can have an all black coat. While the Kaibab squirrel has a black body with a white tail. Both are found in coniferous forests.

In the summer squirrels are most active two to three hours after sunrise, then they'll rest in the afternoon. Resuming activity again two hours before sunset. The squirrel will retire to its nest well before dark, and will rarely leave the nest in the dark. In the winter, the squirrel will complete its activities between dawn and mid- day, and will remain in or around the nest until the next day.

During winter storms, or severe cold, the squirrel may not leave the nest for days. But, the tree squirrel does not hibernate!

An adult squirrel normally lives alone. But will, in severe cold, share its nest with other squirrels to conserve body heat. Once the temperature rises, the guests will be on their way.

Squirrels eyes are located high, and on each side of their head. This allows them a wide field of vision, without turning their head.

The gray squirrels diet consists of nuts, seeds and fruit. It will eat bird eggs, bugs, and even an animal carcass if there is no other food source available.

The gray squirrel requires some salt in its diet, and may find this salt in the soil along roads where snow and ice may have been.

Squirrels chew on tree branches to sharpen and clean their teeth. That's why you may see many small branches on the ground around large trees. They will also chew on power lines for the same reason, this has caused many major power outages throughout the country.

A squirrel's brain is about the size of a walnut.

The average adult squirrel needs to eat about a pound of food a week to maintain an active life.

Squirrels communicate through a series of chirps. The frequency, and the duration of the notes communicate everything from laughter to alarm. Their frequency range is normally between .01 KHz. and 10 KHz. (kilohertz). These sounds when used in conjunction with tail gestures, form the basis for squirrel communication.

If a squirrel has taken up residence in your attic or crawl space, the only practical way to remove them is by trapping.

A squirrel will break the shell of a nut with its teeth, then clean the nut by licking it or rubbing on its face before it is buried. This action applies a scent to the nut which helps the squirrel find it later, even under a foot of snow.

The sweat glands of a tree squirrel are located on their feet, between the foot pads and on their paws between the toes. When hot or excited a squirrel will leave wet tracks on a dry surface. This scent is also used to mark the trees in their territory.

If a squirrels nest becomes infested with fleas or other parasites, it will move to, or build a new nest. This is why there may be more nests then squirrels in a given area.

The gray squirrel has been known to build a nest in many unusual places, in an attic or a crawl space seems to be the most common. Squirrels have also built nests in automobiles, chimney's, barbecue grills and under porches.

When a squirrel senses danger, its first instinct is to stand motionless. If on the ground it will race to the closest tree, or other climbable object to escape. If it is in a tree, it will circle the trunk with its body pressed tightly to the bark.

The squirrel's erratic path while crossing a street is an attempt to confuse the oncoming vehicle... thereby causing it to change direction. This is obliviously the squirrels biggest, and often last mistake.

The male tree squirrel takes twice as long, as the female, to groom itself. They are the cleanest animal in the rodent family.

A squirrels teeth grow continuously. Their incisor's will grow six inches per year, but stay short due to the constant wear they receive.

The most common type of squirrel bite is a result of feeding a squirrel by hand. Never hold the food between your fingers, chances are very good you will be bitten. A squirrel's eyes are always looking for predators and they rarely focus on what they are eating.

    Squirrels!!!???

I have a few squirrels that have decided my attic is the palce to be. I have found where thay come in, but I can not fix it until I get them out!!! I need a humane way of driving them out w/ needing to buy any fancy stuff, or call someone. Please help!Squirrels!!!???

    they dislike moth balls
Get a cat and put him up there for a few days.
i had chipmunks in my house, i used a bb gun for 2 or 3 of them, and used a cup to trap another. they like to hang around walls, so put a tube of some sort against the wall and when they go in grab it and turn it right side up so they are traped in it.
Go up into the attic. Most likely you will scare them away by just being there. Do the closure repairs immediately. You better hustle Humane or otherwise or these tree rats will have babes in the attic. and then you are really gonna have a time of it.
Why don't you try to get them out with loud music or noise. Then you can patch up the hole. Make sure that you look for a nest with babies in the attic. They are always breeding.
you may be able to go to your city shelter and just borrow there trap. You really do want to get them out because they can cause alot of problems especially if they chew on you telephone wires, cable wire, and electric. They are a real pain. You also can put a sign up there saying no squirrels allowed. Good luck

Squirrels are opportunists. They will displace whoever is not strong enough to repel them. And the weakest will die in the brutal struggle for survival - thus creating a habitat for other smaller creatures and creating the right ground conditions for the growth of another tree.

So beware, you and your home could be their next target.
    The Squirrel Relocation Committee
omg!!! - you ask me this just before i go to bed??? NOW i'm worried!

do you think they would like to come and stay in my garden??

    ~x~
I think the loss of trees in a squirrels natural habitat whether it is due to natural causes of man-made causes will lead to what are known as ground squirrels. These animals dig burrows or dens out in the ground with long, sharp claws. However if the loss of trees is not gradual but sudden it would lead to the extermination of all the squirrels in that habitat because the squirrels had no time to adapt.

However if it is just a single tree we are talking about the squirrel will just build another nest in the next nearest tree.
    The tree next to it.
More importantly, if a man speaks in the woods and no woman is there to hear him... Is he still wrong?

Best time to hunt squirrels in late Fall?

early morning or middayBest time to hunt squirrels in late Fall?
When I was a tad younger, I would fill my deer tags with a bow within the first few weeks of the season, leaving me sometimes 4 more weekends to squirrel hunt before the deer gun season started. I cherish those days, first because I had already gotten my venison for the season, and second, because I got to hunt ol' bushytails during the best time of the year!

I loved taking the .22 up into the deer stands right before dawn. Honestly, because I missed the same squirrel a few weeks in a row, I remember that I'd see him climb down the tree just as the sun was coming up. In my opinion, the first hour where it the light is sufficient to shoot is the best time. The squirrels come down from the trees and feed on the nuts they've buried all summer long. Not to say that the rest of the day isn't productive, but I'd say first light (dawn) and last light (dusk) are the best two times for squirrels.

HOWEVER, with it being late fall, and all the leaves being down, I did master a technique (especially when it snows here in NY) to use during midday. After the first hour or two, I'd stop sitting and start still hunting. Sometimes I'd come across fresh squirrel tracks in the snow. I'd follow them until they stopped around a tree - and if you look long and hard enough, sometimes you see them in the branches just hiding out. In the summer it works because of all the leaves. In the late fall and winter, they can be spotted with a little bit of effort.Best time to hunt squirrels in late Fall?
All the squirrels that I've gotten this season, I shot between 4 and 5:30 pm.

    Do Cats eat Squirrels?

This morning,I was listening to what I thought was a ';cat fight';,in my backyard. I looked out the window,to see my neighbor's cat, wrestling with a baby squirrel. The squirrel was'nt fighting back, just trying to get away,so I went to get a glass of water,to throw it on the cat,to make him stop, but by the time I got outside, both of them were gone. Do you think the cat took the squirrel somewhere to eat it?Do Cats eat Squirrels?
Cats can eat squirrels and mice, but a domestic cat usually if it's fed everyday will not eat wild animals. It might kill them and bring them home as a gift to show their love for you, but they will not eat it.Do Cats eat Squirrels?

If the cat is an outdoor cat then the cat my have ate it. If not the cat took it back to your neighbors lay ed it on your neighbors porch for the family to see its prize(my cat did that with chipmunks)
Cats DO eat mice, and if it considered the baby squirrel / chipmunk to be a tiny rodent treat, it's possible it ate it.
Cats can eat squirrels. They sometimes think its fun to chase and kill things. Sometimes they won't eat their kill.

And yes that cat probably ate the bay squirrel.
Yes cats eat squirrels birds mice lizards just about anything samll like that
If your cat is big enough then it will eat a baby squrill, if the squrill threatens the cat.

The way to defeat insurgent squirrels is in fact very simple. Bluster loudly about an anti-squirel troop surge. Go to congress and ask for more billions in our war against radical squirels. Claim that the money is for the troops. Then very quietly go to the various leaders of the squirel insurgency and pay them vast sums of american taxpayer monies. Presto-Changeo the breakneck pace of squirel led terror groups on their way to world domination will slow dramatically. It is precicely NOW that you must strike ! This very Sunday in fact !

Whilst the radical squirels are busy gloating over their money, send Chuck Norris into thier midsts, as he will sure kick some squirel butt, thus saving the world from nut-devils and tail fluffers for ever !

Hey, its as good a plan as any the Bush Administration has come up with.....
You should trick them into a net. Put peanut butter on the ground and they will come to the net and you could catch them all and then take them on a rocket and ship them to outer space :)

Squirrels don't make good pets. They need an absurd amount of attention, and they can't be kept in a cage. Check out this website for more information on squirrels as pets

    Not My Cat.

The cat, if it was Hungary could of ate the poor squirrel. Most likely if the cat's not Hungary it would not eat it.But it did probably kill the baby squirrel. My cat kills mice and shrew all of the time but never eats them.My dog eats them!
It's always possiable, the cat could have just dragged it to another place to play with it some more
my cat eats mice but is afraid of squrrels and birds
umm yeah, i dont think a cat would eat a squirrels. it prob. just ran
I think they just wanted to play cats are very curious

I have to save the world from squirrels by Sunday! Any advice?

    *note*

I do not know if the peanut butter will work for squirrels but it will work for rats. (according to the movie Wanted). LOL J/K

i didn't know that the world was in danger of being ruined by squirrels, but thanks for the heads up. there is this one squirrel that lives by my house and he is completely black. it's the only one i have ever seen. i think he is the ring leader, if you can get to him i think you are good - do you need directions?
Its not the squirrels you have to worry about, its the horses. They are controlling the other animals! Take out the horses and the squirls will become the happy, mischievous devils we all know and love. Good luck!

Thats just what the horses want you to believe:)
Ok, first, go to the grocery store and buy 3 tubs of mayonaise. then spread it all on the trees. Squirrels hate mayo!!! then once they knock out from the taste of it take your shot gun and BOOM shoot em! ^_^
    Okay then...
Poisen all the nuts. (Nuts from the trees)

and also get alot of BB Guns and BBs
    Watch your nuts
Awwwwwwww poor squirrels, send em my way I'll feed em for ya. My birdfeeders have now become bird/squirrel feeders :S

  • Are white squirrels rare?

I have a ton of white squirrels in our backyard i use to not see any at all but they are tons now. It use to be like oh my god look a white squirrel but its just normal now. Its nothing new to me or my family but are they rare? I live in ohio by the way.Are white squirrels rare?
thats pretty cool actually. I have never seen an all white one. Now we have had some that were brown or gray that their tails went from brown at the base and faded to white. Also have some black squirrels, but never seen a white one. Up in Wisconsin there is about 500 white whitetail deer. They are naturally bred that way. I dominant gene takes over for albinism. Are white squirrels rare?
There is, in fact, one tree squirrel for which a white coat seems to be a characteristic of the entire species. Its an Oriental Tree Squirrel with the scientific name Callosciurus finlaysoni (Callosciurus translates as ';beautiful squirrel';) found in Thailand and other parts of South East Asia. So if you sighted a white squirrel here in North America outside of captivity, its almost certainly a color variant of one of our many native species of the genus Sciurus; in my neighborhood, that would be the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Most of what follows will be in reference to that species but white coated Fox Squirrels and Red Squirrels have been sighted, as well.
The previous answers already touch on the fact that you've very likely got a local population of albino Grey Squirrels. What's interesting is that there are places in the eastern US where there are local populations of melanistic (black) Grey Squirrels that have been established for many decades. Genetics is cool!
yes white squirrels are very rare. There breed is not though, they are probably just the common squirrel but albino. Every species has an albino race. You probably just got lucky and had to albino squirrels that cary the albino gene and they had little baby squirrels.
Yes, very!!! At least in my part of the country!!!

I didn't know that there were lots of them anywhere, though!!! Good deal!!!

Thanks for sharing that!!! Enjoy them!!!
Aww a little albino family! cute!

yes albinos (white coat/skin) of any species are rare, if you're seeing more than one then the chances are they are all related and breeding so passing on the gene for albinism.
I never saw a white one in my life.
    no not at all

Where do squirrels urinate? Do they do it in roofs?

ceiling stains blamed on squirrel peeWhere do squirrels urinate? Do they do it in roofs?
sounds like a roofer did a bad job and looking for a scapegoat. I doubt that a squirrels bladder is big enough to hold enough pee to stain a ceiling unless they keep going in the same spot which I doubtWhere do squirrels urinate? Do they do it in roofs?
Where ever they get the urge. If your roof does not leak and you do not have squirrels in you attic, I doubt that the ceiling stains are to be blamed on the squirrels.

However, the next time it rains hard, go up into the attic with a light and check out the roof for leaks. That is the most likely cause.

If you do have squirrels in the attic, you should hear them running around up there. If so, buy a live trap, not a small one but a medium size one and bait it with bird seed. You will catch them in no time at all. There may be several up there so keep setting the trap. Once you trap them do not turn them loose alive or they will return. Fill a garbage pail with water and toss the trap in. Remember squirrels bite hard.
You know how they have two big nests in the trees. One is the bathroom and the other is their home.
If they did do it on the roof, do you have an attic? wouldnt it seep into there before your ceiling? I dont know, but the stains could just be from water damage.
Whenver you're walking outside, and you feel that drop of rain... followed by no rain... instant squirrel urine...or babybatter
They urinate wherever they want. They also use urine as a scent marker for their tracking purposes, so it's possbile they peed on your roof to mark their territory.
When squirrels live in your attic, they also use it as their personal toilet. Squirrels have a high metabolism, eat a lot, and leave behind up to 20 droppings a day. They also urinate quite a bit. The droppings and urine not only smell bad, but they pose a biohazardous risk, and the smell attracts new squirrels. Squirrels, like all rodents, depend upon smells that both mark territory and serve as a sort of scent map to help familiarize them with their environment. Once a squirrel has scent marked an area, squirrels years into the future will know that the area is a good squirrel habitat, since squirrels have successfully thrived there before
I'd say they go where ever they want. Are they in your attic? Either a rodent or a roof leak. . . .
im pretty sure they urinate in in tree holes for sure!

Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?

In Council Bluffs Iowa they have 3 kinds. Black Grey and red. In Minnesota they have flying squirrels. It is just where they have been introduced into those areas and have thrived. Squirrels can't buy airline or bus tickets to travel so they are where they are unless humans intervene and move them which they do from time to time. That's how the black squirrel got to Iowa. Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?
Because there are different species all over North America, end their areas overlap given you the sense they are just a single species. There are local color patterns in different areas, and changes due to evolutive reasons, giving some individuals advantages over neighbors with a color not so well suited. Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?
There are different species of squirrels. The ones where I live are gray and there are some that are brown.
I grew up in southern ontario and the Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) has two color phases there, grey and black (same species, just different coat colors). It has a wide distribution in the east of NA.

    http://www.unity.edu/webdesign/tmorgan/s鈥?/a>

The eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) also has a broad distribution in the east.

    http://www.discoverlife.org/nh/tx/Verteb鈥?/a>

It is more brown in color, and at least where I am in Texas is smaller than the grey squirrels in Ontario, but that may just be a latitude difference. I have not seen grey squirrels here, apparently they are more common in east Texas.

In terms of why there is the color polymorphism in the eastern grey squirrel, I have never seen a study that tried to explain it, though I haven't looked carefully (try google scholar). I don't think it causes nonrandom mating (grey with grey, etc) but I may be wrong about that. There may be a selective difference that varies over geographical area.
Evolution! I am not positive that the squirrels in different areas of the country are actually different species, as many species of animals like the ';grey'; squirrel have been misnamed before. Humans have many different hair colors, but we are all the same species. However, you see certain combinations in certain environments as a result of natural selection. Very fair-skinned people in Africa or the Middle East would be susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer, and might even be easier to spot against dark sand and dirt. Therefore, you see fair-skinned Scandinavians, dark-skinned Middle Easterners, and almost black-skinned Africans. The very homogenous look that Asians have is largely due to geographic isolation (ie Japan).

Evolution drives variation different ways. For example, in the eastern US any squirrels that are black might be immediately more noticeable to predators and the black coloration is therefore evolutionarily less favorable. Perhaps the same is true for grey squirrels in Canada. Or, to make things even more compliated, maybe there's genes linked to coat color. Even if grey squirrels are EASIER for predators to spot than black squirrels, they may still dominate an area. Maybe certain immunities are associated with being grey. Let's say grey squirrels are resistant to parasite or disease X, and disease X is present in the eastern US. Grey squirrels will therefore be infected less and could have more grey offspring than black squirrels have black offspring (disease often lowers reproductive output). However, in Canada, this disease may not be present, so the advantages conferred by not being seen by predators outweighs the lack of immunity.

Evolution and genetics is an endlessly fascinating (and complex) subject. To me at least! :)
Many things can influence different coloring in types of squirrels, such as geographic isolation, or the environment in witch they live in. Coloration may also assist in attracting a mate??? I'm no expert, but I know a little bit about them.
Probably has something to do with the color of their surrounding environment. They would evolve different fur colors to blend in.

Should there be a cull of grey squirrels in the UK?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/feb/10/grey-squirrels-cull-wildlife-conservationShould there be a cull of grey squirrels in the UK?
    Awww, poor squirrels.

But, yes, they should be culled.

I would suggest eating them, as many people do over here in the US. The people who are complaining about killing them might be less upset if it is portrayed as ';killing for food in tough economic times'; rather than ';culling';.Should there be a cull of grey squirrels in the UK?
Yes, should have been done years ago before the problem got as out of control as it is.

Grey squirrels are not native, they are a pest species.

The problem is that mainly urban voters see them as cute and cuddly so the government is scared to allow culling through fear of a backlash.

If they lived in the country as I do then they would see the damage the grey does not only to the resident red squirrel population but also to native tree species.

But folk don't, they don't step outside of their own little world but they think they know everything.

The grey squirrel numbers needs to be checked....not wiped out, that should never happen to any animal...not even an animal that shouldn't really be here.

Just kept in check by a cull system.
Yes. We need to start eating them, actually. We can do our bit by making them into squirrel casseroles and squirrel curries.
Yes if it saves the reds as they are taking over their habitat

    Are squirrels enemies with crows?

I saw a squirrel fighting a crow in my back yard...Are squirrels enemies with crows?
    Only humans make enemies.

There is a degree of intolerance between the two species. Adult crows if given the chance will kill and eat a baby squirrel. They do share some food items, like acorns. In peoples back yards they might compete for food that is left out for pets. Are squirrels enemies with crows?
i find it comparable to the anger a southwestern swallow might have towards a german shepard who has a stumpy tail and a deformed left ear
No, not usually. I feed the squirrels peanuts in the park at lunchtime and have some regular crows that come in along with them. Every now and then a greedy squirrel will try to chase a crow or another squirrel away, but that's about it.

(+ crows are carnivores, that's why you see smaller birds attacking them in flight...they eat baby birds/small animals. and while in my spot, I've saved 3 bats from the crows)
Oh heck yeah! Squirrels love to eat baby birds! Even if a baby isn't around, birds will still attack a squirrel.

Also, crows can be pretty territorial with any kind of animal, especially if there is a food source they want.
