not that i am aware. i've always thought them to be quite active during the winter. then again, i live in the south and our winter is not as cold as others and i dont know how much of a difference that would make...Squirrels hibernate in the winter or not?

Squirrels in my attic?
we got a squirrel that chewed her way in to our attic, im concerned cause i have a newborn baby and the landlord f the house doesn want an exterminator cause he thinks he can handle it himself but it has been several days and no luck... what should i do? should i be concerned about diseases or fleas?

There are companies that will remove the squirrels in a humane manner.
My neighbor had a problem with Raccoons and Squirrels and they hired a company to do the job.
Squirrels don't have much of a problem with fleas which is a minor problem,but they can carry Rabies.
Now that is a serious concern with a new baby.
Give your landlord a written complaint to fix the problem.
Tell him you will with hold rent or move or both.
It is the responsibility of your landlord to provide you with safe premises.
This is your right.

I wouldn't worry a squirrel in your attic giving diseases to your child. Obviously make sure the squirrel is nowhere near your child anyway to avoid bites (which would be extremely unlikely to happen because squirrels generally don't attack unprovoked, and a newborn can't really provoke a squirrel).
If it's confined to the attic I'd say it presents no real risk to you or your baby. Squirrels aren't particularly disease-ridden anyway.

I love the little tree-hoppers! They are absolutely adorable! I keep my cat (';Der Tanz Der Schatten';, aka ';Schatti';) in the house because he will catch and eat them. NOOOOO! BAD KITTY!!!
There is this one squirrel that hangs out by my house and I named her ';Miss Rosey Tail'; because her tail is a very pretty rosey shade. She absolutely adores Oreos, oranges and brown rice. She will eat out of my hand. I give her peanuts once in a while and she buries them for later. I bought her some strawberries the other day, but she's not sure what to think of them yet. She'll come around eventually. She's such a cute, good little squirrely girl.
I LOVE squirrels. In Scandinavian mythology, squirrels were messengers. They are not only all around my home (Miss Rosey Tail is only one of many), but they are fairly prominent in my culture! How cool is that?

They empty it out in ten minutes,wasting half of it to the ants on the ground, when the birds could eat off of it for days.
Also, try having a garden or even a flower bed, when they find it they will ruin it.

On my campus nobody likes to eat outside because squirrels will come out on the table near their food and try to steal some (as a result of people feeding them in the past). They also become a little agressive...throwing things at them does not scare them anymore.
As animals, they are fine....just enjoy them from a distance.

That's not really a dumb question! We have strays and squirrels and I noticed that the strays didn't seem to do much chasing of squirrels which I found odd.
But I did see them stalking a squirrel once, so I would imagine the answer is yes if they're in the mood.

That's not really a dumb question! We have strays and squirrels and I noticed that the strays didn't seem to do much chasing of squirrels which I found odd.

I was on a walk today with my friend, Ben, when a squirrel ran through the grass next to us. I said ';Hey Ben! Look at that squirrel!'; and as I said ';Ben';, it froze and looked at me. It started to run again and I called to it but it wouldn't stop. Then I said ';Ben'; again and it stopped and looked at me again. It ran a third time and the only way I could get it to stop was by yelling ';Ben';. I wonder if its name was Ben too.Do wild squirrels have names?

LOL this is so random but I'm sitting by my window and I just saw a squirrel jump all the way from my roof onto a small, skinny tree branch. How do squirrels always jump so far and manage to land on such a small tree branch with such precisioon. They never fall! LolQuestion about squirrels...?
They have built in high tension springs in their legs, their bones have tiny air holes that make them lighter so the tiniest of branches wont break. They also inhale, and hold their breaths so they have more air time. Dont ask how they get extra propulsion in mid air.
As far as precision goes, they have cross hairs built in their retina so they can hit their targeted branch on the point. On a rare moment they do fall, and its a sad sight, as the other squirrels will tease him/her relentlessly. Hope that answers your questions :)Question about squirrels...?

We were sitting on the porch when the squirrel made his jump and there was no limb. He hit the ground and sat there a minute with the most surprised look. We almost rolled off the porch laughing.
I love those little red squirrels - they seem to fly through the trees. Just make sure they're not making a nest in your attic. One kept trying to climb my gutters last year. Once they're in there, it's hard to get them out.

waaaaaaaaaa?? Dont make a coat out of em, stuff them and make a kick azzzz stuffed squirrel army out of them like janitor did. i wish i had a squirrel army. i just have one ferocious one who tries to attack me if i dont give him peanuts and one that i lured into my house with a peanut trail and once inside he went ballistic. did you know that squirrels can climb curtains like a fireman climbs a ladder. they do, and even after opening all your windows and doors trying to chase a squirrel out of your house is impossible albeit a rockin' good time.
A workable skin is about 4 inches x 5 1/2 on a normal squirrel. I'm guessing at least 100 to make a full length coat. I'll mail you a few dozen if you are interested. BTW - Hey SquirrelCage

I have just seen a grey squirrel eat a goldfinch. Another squirrel came by and wouln't touch the remains. I saw this squirrel eating a golfinch yesterday. He picked them off of one of my thistle feeder bags.

Get a couple of shakers of cayenne pepper from your local grocery store and sprinkle it around the edges and under the trees. Squirrels hate the smell of that stuff, it gets on their paws and burns their noses and eyes. Do you stop for squirrels or run them over?
anyone who says they run them over is either a cynic teenager or an assholeDo you stop for squirrels or run them over?
I stop! I mean, if you were a harmless animal who went out in front of a car, would you want them to kill you? Also it puts them through pain.
It's just rude to do that! I even stop for bugs and toads if i can! Why are you asking this anyway??Do you stop for squirrels or run them over?
If there is not a lot of traffic, its best for you to stop because you wouldn't want to hurt the animal :( and if there's like a lot of traffic, then i think its best for you to avoid it.
Id stop and let them get across the road. I hate when ppl hit little animals and deer and then just leave them in the middle of the road.
I slow down and hope they move fast if not try to go around them but i would rather hit them then end up in a wreck or hurt somebody behind me.

There is lots of edible stuff in trash cans and dumpsters behind restaurants, and even where trash is put into cans.
The City government is using nearly all money for salaries, very little for infrastructure, repairs, maintenance, oversight of loafing by city workers, rodent control and all the necessary items that enable a city to work.
Police are more in demand than ever before, shootings are rampant, even in churches lately. But the police forces have been reduced owing to budget deficits caused by mismanagement.
There has been a strange proliferation of black squirrels, it looks like they are replacing the gray ones that were vastly predominant 10 years ago. No idea why this color change, but it may keep them slightly warmer at the beginning and end of winter, when it is still cold but they are out and about looking for food.
I have seen some squirrels here eating junk food trash, also bird nestlings. Are they becoming carnivores? That would be remarkable.

You can use a dust but i would probably suggest those little containers of liquid flea and tick repellent for dogs there are usually 4 in a package and last about a month each one has about a half ounce or less of liquid in it You can buy it at walmart .Or a liquid spray repellent for cats and dogs .use the spray repellent inside his house or what ever he stays in spray the inside of it good .I used to have 4 baby squirrels and i cut a hollow log out of a tree for them to live in .It wont do much good to treat him if you don't treat the area he lives in
You should go see a vet. It may have dangerous desises for you and your pet. You should also ask him on how to take care of it.

My cat loves to chase squirrels and can spend hours watching over and sticking her paws into chipmunk holes. She really goes after chipmunks. When we found her under our shed, she was so tiny that one day a chipmunk chased her out! I think she wants revenge.
Of course, what she hasn't figured out yet is that she has no chance of catching them because I'm standing just a few feet away holding the leash. The critters have plenty of warning that something is coming!
Is it okay to feed these squirrels?
These are the most unusual squirrels I have ever seen, and they are so pretty, I want to keep them hanging around. Is it okay to feed them, and what sorts of things do they like to eat?

LOL. Yeah, I would advise keeping a few cans of tomato juice around the house to get rid of the smell if you get sprayed.
My dad actually had a pet skunk when he was little....(we's country folk!). They had it's scent glands removed and he said it made a good pet after that.
And one time an opossum was on our back porch and my mom ';hollered'; at us to come and look at the ';giant rat';.
I'm glad I moved to the city several years ago....
That looks like some kind of skunk-ferret with a little racoon.lol,idk what to feed it but it's cute.

I have maybe 5-6,but my neighbour has like 10. I have literally have looked out the window and there are 10 squirrels eating from his food tray. That is alot isn't it? I have 5 or 6 at a time, but my mother has a ton! Usually 9 or 10 devoted squirrels because she feeds them bread w/ peanut butter on it, shelled peanuts, and whatever else she thinks they'll like. I have gotten pictures of them looking for food %26amp; they come up to the sliding glass door and tap on it to let her know they need some snacks!Weird Q,but how many Squirrels do you have in your yard??

How do i clean squirrels so i can eat them?
Pretty easy, really.
After you kill the squirrel, take your knife and cut a hole in the center of his back, crosswise of his body. Make the hole about a inch wide. Next, insert on finger from either hand into the opening, and pull just enough to make the hole large enough to get a better grip with more fingers. Then just pull your hands apart. The skin will usually tear around the squirrel, leaving it looking very much like a pair of pants and a shirt on the squirrel. Pull off the top part first, the ';shirt'; pulling the skin up until his wrist and neck is free of skin. Then break the wrist and cut loose below the freed skin. Remove the head, and the skin from the ';shirt'; has the head and front feet in it. Unless you plan on eating the brains, throw it away. Personally, I'll leave squirrel brains and scrambled eggs to the old-timers!
Next, hit the bottom half, the ';pants'; Same basic procedure, but this time you're gonna have some intestines at the bottom, and if it was a male squirrel there's gonna be some more equipment down there...just yank it or cut it off.
Now when you open it up, use just the tip of your knife. Put your finger on the backside of the blade, about a half inch or so from the point, so you don't bust any internal organs. Horrible smell...avoid if possible. Start at the pelvis and run the blade all the way up to the ribcage. At this point, rupturing organs are no longer a concern, so go ahead and slice the ribcage open, sternum to throat. Slide your fingers into the abdomen cavity, and pull out the internals. Make sure you get all of it; it's not hard. Next, remove the lungs and heart. Make sure to get the windpipe. Also, remember to bust the pelvis and make sure you get all the intestines and any droppings that may have squeezed out.
Take the squirrel inside, wash it with cold water, remove the legs and cut in half about halfway up the body. Fill a fairly large bowl with saltwater, and put the dressed squirrel in it and put the whole thing in the refridgerator for at least a few hours, or overnight. Then, pull the squirrel out, wash it, and either cook it, or freeze it.

officer 23 has it right. I like to make my cut on the back skin high and that way, I can pull the ';shirt'; up and cut off the paws and head right there. I then pull the ';pants'; off the squirrel and then gut it and wash it out after cutting off the tail and feet. Then soak them overnight in salt water. Good eating!
Well, I had a baby hawk one time and had to teach the bird to eat, fly, kill etc. I did in my share of squirrels to feed that hawk. Once you start taking of the skin it's pretty self explanatory. Plenty of meat on a squirrel, I was amazed myself.

2 - kill squirrel by slicing throat - hang upside down to drain blood
3. skin squirrel
4 - gut squirrel
5 - BBQ squirrel and enjoy with a nice glass of Shiraz
Officer has got it. That is the fastest and easiest way to do it. I got 15 the little buggers in my freezer. And they are tasty.

Uh..why would you eat a squirrel? They're so darn adorable!
After you kill the squirrel, take your knife and cut a hole in the center of his back, crosswise of his body. Make the hole about a inch wide. Next, insert on finger from either hand into the opening, and pull just enough to make the hole large enough to get a better grip with more fingers. Then just pull your hands apart. The skin will usually tear around the squirrel, leaving it looking very much like a pair of pants and a shirt on the squirrel. Pull off the top part first, the ';shirt'; pulling the skin up until his wrist and neck is free of skin. Then break the wrist and cut loose below the freed skin. Remove the head, and the skin from the ';shirt'; has the head and front feet in it. Unless you plan on eating the brains, throw it away. Personally, I'll leave squirrel brains and scrambled eggs to the old-timers!
Next, hit the bottom half, the ';pants'; Same basic procedure, but this time you're gonna have some intestines at the bottom, and if it was a male squirrel there's gonna be some more equipment down there...just yank it or cut it off.
Now when you open it up, use just the tip of your knife. Put your finger on the backside of the blade, about a half inch or so from the point, so you don't bust any internal organs. Horrible smell...avoid if possible. Start at the pelvis and run the blade all the way up to the ribcage. At this point, rupturing organs are no longer a concern, so go ahead and slice the ribcage open, sternum to throat. Slide your fingers into the abdomen cavity, and pull out the internals. Make sure you get all of it; it's not hard. Next, remove the lungs and heart. Make sure to get the windpipe. Also, remember to bust the pelvis and make sure you get all the intestines and any droppings that may have squeezed out.
